Parson's: How old do they get, and breeding?

gomezvi Aug 07, 2003 09:50 AM

First off, let me say I don't know a thing about Parson's, don't have one, probably couldn't afford one, so I'm not looking to acquire one. I'm just looking for a few quick answers.
I have a friend who has a male Parson's, about 3 years old. He said they live to be 20 years old, and don't breed until they're at least 5 years old.
I was very surprised when I heard this, and am looking for confirmation. Anyone know about their life expectancy and breeding?
BTW, if anyone has a female Parson's, he is very much interested in breeding....

I heard parsons can live up to 30 years. They dont reach sexual maturity a lot slower than other chams, and I've heard incubation times can take 2 years. this is the reason why they are so expensive.

Actually, the most likely reasons for their high cost are that they are considered the ultimate brag cham, they are exported out of Madagascar infrequently if at all, they don't breed easily or often in captivity, and those who have them are not willing to sell except to someone who can demonstrate a perfect setup for them. Money is not the main motivation for selling and buying this species. According to CIN species info parsoni can live over 20 years, but attempts to breed animals younger than about 5 years were not successful. They do most things slowly...mature, breed, gestate, incubate, drink, move, etc.
