should i upgrade as they age?

RedQuake Aug 07, 2003 09:50 AM

I have a 40 gallon tank and i believe a 22 gallon (36"x12"x12" tank. I would like the latter for one male and the 40 gallon for females. But, if i get youngsters, should i place them in smaller tanks first and as they age move them to the larger tanks? I have two ten gal, two 20gal, and two 15 gal.

My male Boo, is in a ten gallon right now but it just doesn't look like enough space to me because he's growing so quickly.

Oh yes, there is another thing...the 40 and 22 gal tanks are on units, in pretty much an L shape on opposite walls. Meaning that the male will be able to see the females. Is this a problem? Will that stress him out? And where Boo is now, he would be able to see the other male. So should i put both males in my 20 gallon tank unit, one tank on a shelf above the other, to prevent them from seeing eachother and the females? Would it be Ok to leave the 22gal as a breeding tank, introducing both the male and female to a new environment?

Sorry for the long post, and thanks in advance

I have my male in a 20L tank and he loves it. I wouldnt think about putting him in one smaller now, but a 10 gal tank is plenty for one full grown adult leo. Granted its not huge with everything thing they need inside like the shelters and all put its ok for one adult. You could actually put 2 or so but I dont thats just to crowded for my taste. If you have hatchling you can put them in a 10 gal but I have heard that when you do that soemtimes that they will lose their tails because the other leos dont realize that its not food but a tail and they bite it thiking it is food. I would put them in a sweater box set up. Cheap and easy. By the way you have a lot of tanks lol. WIth the set up and the male being able to see the other males adn females I am not sure but my vet asked me one time with one leo if he she could see my male because of the age difference and the sex difference might stress her out but im not sure, and the males seeing eachotheer it might become a territorial despoit maybe try putting them in tanks that are next to eachother but cant see eacother, that might work. And your other ? about the breeding tank that should work as long as you dont put to many leos into it and overcrowd them.

Thankyou. I think i'll put the males in my 20 gal tank unit. They won't be able to see eachother or the girls Yes i do have alot of tanks , i even have 3 more, one for my crested gecko Zeek, another hopefully for 2 female crested geckos and a hexegon tank i originally had Zeek in (((i've posted pics of Zeeks home in the Canadian gecko forum and the crested gecko forum if your curious )))

Everywhere you look down here theres tanks....including 2 fish tanks LOL Even worse, my dad has a unit he built for 6 fish tanks upstairs. I gave him one small tank i had when his guppies had babies

I'm 26 and really need to buy a house but i dread it with all the tanks i have to move hehehe.
Thanks again

You definitely should start babies of in large tanks. Most breeders keep babies in shoebox rubbermaids, which are smaller than ten gallons and as they turn juvi they move them to a bigger one and then a bigger one as adults. So you shouldnt start them in the biggest tank you have available.
I dont know about the L-Shaped male seeing females problem, but I think if you want you can just try and then if it you see any behavior problems you can change them.

Oh i'm sorry i didnt' mean baby babies. I meant juvies i guess. I am hoping to get sub adults but if not i'll have juvies. The breeder i contacted has so many to choose from and i've been sitting here trying to figure out what exactly it is i want and where to place everyone.

Could you clarify for me what size is Ok for a 10gal? Boo is getting big and i believe he's still a juvie. I'm going to see if i can get any good pics of him next to a ruler. I'll post pics tomorrow and if i can get opinions on if its Ok to move him to the 20 gal that would be great. If i put both males in that unit they can't see eachother or the females, which is good cause i don't want to risk stressing them out
I'm stressed out enough for everyone LOL
Thanks for replying
