This hobby can be depressing

Morgans Boas Nov 10, 2006 02:00 PM

I bought a Boa a couple weeks ago that was sick. Prior to the purchase, I checked on the sellers BOI feedback, and it was all really positive by many of you here on this forum. Plus I was also encouraged by the high end animals that he was selling, and that he's been a long-term seller. Now I'm dealing with low-pitched whistle breathing, snot bubbles, and lips that are stuck together each day from thick saliva, and vet appt's/antibiotics. I'm currently updating him (seller) with emails. He assures me that she was fine upon departure (Delta Dash), and kept in perfect conditions, and I'm stating to him that she arrived ill and is being kept in perfect conditions. I don't think that this was caused by the shipment, it appears to be more devoloped than that.
I don't like confrontations and I'll probably end up dealing with this myself. Not too many people would want to buy a sick Boa to care for, and it is causing me to lose faith in my co-hobbiests' even with good reputations.
Sorry I felt the need to vent. Please don't ask for this persons name,or business name, I can't give it out on this forum. After our emailings are complete, I'll give my honest feedback on the BOI.

David,

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. At least the animal is in good hands now and will get the help it needs. There are a lot of bad people in this hobby, but there are a lot of good ones too, so keep the faith. I hope this all works out.

back or offer to pay for the vet visit to prove the illness? If not i'd say he's one of the not so good people in the biz. Hope all works out for you and the boa. Please keep us posted.

Prior to the shipment, we had good emails, and phone conversations. This Boa was priced low, to "make room" and I stressed that good health was a must, and I was assured that she was healthy when she left. Since I'm not one to push the issue, maybe I should suck it up and deal with it on my own. This isn't my first disappointment when buying online, but after a few disappointments, it gets discouraging. Especially after doing extra precaution checking on the BOI. I felt pretty confident that this was going to work out to my satisfaction. Like I said, I'm still dealing with the sale, so maybe I posted pre-maturely.

I completely and totally know how you feel...from the same experience. I just very recently had a somewhat similar situation with snakes I received Thursday AND feel the same way you do. I'm tempted to just give-up sometimes. Other times I tell myself...NO MORE buys from those I don't know unless it's at a herp show where I can physically examine the animal. I just don't know anymore. I hate it when even those with good standing in the herp community make mistakes or mess things up....if even only once...it just not acceptable when dealing with living animals that depend on us to always do the proper thing, whether its providing proper care or shipping properly. It just shouldn't happen with all that's available to us today with husbandry equipment, shipping supplies, and the past knowledge of those who have made mistakes for us to learn from. Fortunately I *will be* refunded soon. Hopefully you will have things taken care of as well. I wish I could say, look on the bright side...but I'm in just as sour a mood as you are. lol

Sorry to hear that. Thanks for posting.Your post has encouraged me to Be as HONEST as possible,(no exceptions) with my dealings as a small time breeder.I would really hate that to happen to me and it has.So I choose not to pass the grief on to someone else.I hope he does RIGHT by you.I really don't think a plane ride could cause a FULL BLOWN Respitory inf.OVERNIGHT even with a heat pack.Your doing the right thing by posting this and with holding the name untile the end and then posting in the BOI.Good Luck.

I agree with you Mr. Lopez and want to be as honest as possible, even if it hurts me or makes me look bad. The way I see it the only way to do business is honest business.
