Blazing Blizzard?

Grunngg Nov 10, 2006 11:04 PM

I want a Blazing Blizzard Leo and thought about instead of buying one, i'd breed one of my own. Do I just breed an Albino to a Blizzard? Or is there a trick to it? Does it matter what gender each morph is? Any help would be great, thanks.

In theory, you could get a blazing blizzard in a few generations. In practice, I hear it's harder to accomplish due to a phenomenon called trait linkage. Both genes locations are on the same chromosome so they tend to get passed on in pairs.

Chromosome pairs can split and recombine such that genes across the pair do get on to one chromosome to be passed on to the offspring. The split has to occur between the two gene locations to recombine in this manner. The closer the gene locations are on the same chromosome, the harder it is to get them together. The good news is that once they're together they're equally hard to separate so the tendency is to "breed true" thereafter.

F1 you would get Normals dh Blazzing Blizard

F2 you'd get 1/16 change of producing a Blazzing Blizard

I would go with Tremper or Rainwater strains of Albino. As only 1 Bell albino Blazzing Blizard has been produced ever and it passed away before it was a year old. I'll be working on this project shooting for the Holy Grail. But I have a feeling we're looking at a fatal gene combo.

Are the blizard and tremper albino genes not trait linked then? I could have sworn I heard that from somewhere. I could be mistaken though. Either way, the possibility exists after the 2nd generation of offspring. Trait linkage would just affect the odds of seeing a particular trait manifest itself.

Interesting what you've said about the bells. Makes you appreciate all the complexities behind the genes themselves. Has anyone done a rainwater (las vegas) blazing blizzard?

Yes Blazing Blizzard of both Tremper and Rainwater have been produced. The one that everyone is racing for is the Bell. Kelli from HISSS.NET is the person that produce the first and only Bell Blazzing. This is my first year working on DHs for this project. Matter of fact one of my blizzards was placed with the male bell today. From what info I have gathered is that when breeding the DHs very few offsprings were Bell with 66% het blizzard, but many blizards 66% het Bell and normals 66% DH. Eggs that didn't hatch have not been opened to see if there was in fact a Bell Blazing in any of them. Now this is only from the few people I have talked to. I'm sure there are others working on this morph but just have not talked. I'll will be keeping very detailed records (almost to the point of obsessive) on this project.

Sounds pretty cool! Hopefully the bell blizzard project works out for you. Those meticulous records you keep should actually be quite valuable. Given that hets become significant intermediate stages for many of these morph combinations, it's good to know parentage with certainty or at least be able to backtrack based on the offpring.

Good luck!
