Do uromastyx males ever try to mate ( dominate ) whit each other? Haven`t found any information about it.
it is very possible. Although I have not seen any documemtation in Uromastyx species I have seen several references in other lizard species on homosexual activity. But most of the time they just try to kill each other. LOL
Yes I know that other lizard spicies try to dominate each other. The reason I asked is that I have two uromastyx aegyptia at home and I`m shore that one of them is a male. The male is trying to mate whith the other, but I`m not sure if the other one is a female?
You'd be surprised about the prevalence of homosexual activity among many different types of animals... haha never heard about it in lizards, but lizards aren't a very media-friendly animal like penguins and monkeys and sheep and dolphins and dogs and cats who all do it. Maybe some of the members with large collections of animals in groups can comment on if they've ever seen it.
I have had uros with a similar (or not) experience.
It was 6-7 years ago that Doug sent me what we both
thought was a low colored rainbow benti. I remember
he mentioned that it was a poor color for an adult
male but was in great weight. He had also mentioned
that he must have been a good eater as his belly was
nice and full.
A week later I introduced him to an open female
during mid spring. With camera ready I took a couple
of shots while in their intimate embrace which if I
remember right lasted between five to ten minutes.
On their second encounter the very next day I actually
watched as they separated followed by their uplifted
tails and outstretched stance as most of my
breeders exhibit.
Well, to my surprise the supposed male laid nine
good looking eggs a few days later! Doug and I
scratched our heads in amazement. We figured I
had a one of a kind genuine hermaphrodite. We just
knew this was quite the unusual of phenomena in
reptile breeding occurrences.
We wondered if this male/female? had successfully
impregnated the female. AND, if the male/female?
would produce offspring from the eggs he/she had
just laid ... talk about confusing complications ... lol.
After Doug consulted with one of the top uro gurus,
It seems that the supposed male was actually a normal
female but evidently had lesbian tendencies if you will.
What I actually saw (in my eyes) was copulation but
only in this case it was a female penetrating the open
female with an inverted cloaca ... true story.
Below is two shots I took between these two female
mountain benti.

Now I`m even more confussed.lol Well I`ll just have to wait and see, if I have one male and one female or two males or two females.
Just because you asked....

I would almost think staying on the cautios side would be your best bet though until you know for sure on the other's sex. If you have 2 male Egyptians of breeding size you may only have 1 when you get home one day.

John,
I have video tape of a female geyri that exhibited this exact behavior (repeatedly over several days) with a larger male geyri. I actually was thinking of separating her from the male to give him a break. Well, that and he had this humiliated- pleading look on his face every time she mounted him.
This was younger female (3) and her first year gravid. The unusual behavior started directly after an atypical oviposition. Looking at the film- you would swear it was a successful copulation even without seeing the hemipene. The female would hold the position for an unusually long period of time (compared with typically male/female copulation) and this usually resulted in my intervention.
I saw this behavior 4-5 times over a period of a week and then things went back to normal. I just chalked the entire thing up to an inexperienced female and a hormone surge of some sort.
I must say Debb, we could probably right a book on our
'out of the ordinary' occurrences over the years related
to uros alone.
If I've learned one thing, it's that whenever Doug sends
me a lizard ... no matter the sex or species, I first of
all palpate for eggs ... lol. Just kidding Doug!
We've better be careful with our lizard's sex experiences
other wise Eve might put her foot down. OR worse,
Jerry Springer might get hold of it.
John
Converstions about sexual preferences of lizards does not seem to be in violation of the TOS, hehehehee, as long as the lizards are not using FOWL language or name calling while making love, and their owners type it, WE ARE GOOD. LMAO.
Hey I have a story of my own about my 2 male uroplatus henkeli (leaftail geckos) I had a reverse trio, and the boys enjoyed the female, and she seemed to enjoy chosing who she wanted to mingle with on certain occasions.
I lost my female last winter,
and kept the males together, as they get along fine. One night (they are nocturnal) I was getting ready to feed them and noticed them in a very sexual tangle. I mean TANGLE, the whole nine yards,
they stayed this way for quite a bit, before breaking up and going on to hunt dinner.
I remember it well, as when I saw this question on males mating , I laughed to myself, because I had posted on the uroplatus forum and asked my buddies if their males had ever done this.
There ya go John C my lizards are doing the wild thang too....

I actually had to do a lot of editing before hitting the post message button. The off color jokes/statements were coming fast and furious. I think I edited out half my post before I was finished.
After reading Eve's post- it sounds as if I might have gotten away with some of it. I am not saying that it would have been the prudent thing to do but it would have been much more entertaining.
Rosie and Ellen. HEHE. I wish DVL kept uros he would have some great comments for this topic?
My confirmed female bearded dragons (all have laid eggs) do this at least two or three times during the summer months. It seems to stimulate infertile egg production in the female who takes the female mating position. I have video but no pictures.
