Snake found on road in Queretaro, Mexico

cazabache Nov 11, 2006 09:17 AM

I found this snake a couple of days ago just before coming into Toliman, which is just north of Queretaro in Mexico, on the highway that descends from the Sierra Gorda. I used to keep snakes in Florida when I was young, but drifted away to the point that I can't identify some species correctly, more so in Mexico, so I didn't touch it. It had been run over and presented evisceration of what appeared to be part of the intestine from the cloaca. It also had a bit of tissue protruding from the right side of its mouth, as can be seen in some of the photos. I am attaching a close view of its head, tail and part of the body. I felt it was quite large sized, at about four feet or more in length and around an inch in diameter. I can attach more photos if needed.
Is this a coral snake or a king snake of some kind? I have not b een able to find any photos of king or milksnakes with its color pattern, but it seems very similar to patterns on some coral snakes.
I did not have any tools with which to move it to photograph its belly or underside of the tail. Thank you for your help, and sorry if this is the wrong forum to ask in.

Cazabache:

I also responded to your post in the milksnake forum...but, your snake is a Micrurus tener fitzingeri, the southernmost subspecies of the Texas coralsnake. Because I am involved in field work in Queretaro, I'd like to communicate with you, and have PM'd you.

Cheers,

Bob Hansen

Jake,

That little rhyme only works in the US, and really only well in the eastern US. It doesn't apply further south, although it probably does on the Mexican plateau in Queretaro where this snake was found.

In the lowlands of Mexico, don't rely on rhymes. For example, there are some coral snakes with no yellow bands (they are red and black, with only some yellow bands on the head and tail), and some coralsnake mimics with red against yellow.

and I guarantee that I would NOT be remembering any rhymes if I thought a venomous snake was fixin' to cross my path! I can just see myself babbling wondering if it was red touches yellow kill a fellow or red touches black he won't attack! AAAAAAHHHHHH and Oh S*&t would be ALL that's in my head!

I believe Arizona also has some coral snakes that lack yellow.
