flexwatt ,how well would this work ?

bensheimer Nov 11, 2006 10:25 AM

I have several cages im working on and was wondering if putting 11" flexwatt on the ceiling of them with some reflex insulation behind it would be enough to reach the floor and supply enough heat ? The biggest cage is 2x2x6 ,all of the others range from 12" high to just under 24" high and no longer than 48".the room temp can be completly controlled.I thought this might be a better solution than using bulbs.Thank you for any info in advance.

I don't think the heat would reach the floor. It would be better to put the flexwatt underneath the cage, as it will heat the floor itself and then the heat will eventually rise up to the ceiling naturally. This is why most people use flexwatt as "underbelly" heaters.

To elaborate - some people have tried putting flexwatt underneath a "false floor" in existing cages and had good luck. If your have a wood cage, putting the flexwatt under the cage obviously won't pass enough heat through the cage floor because it's too thick and wood doesn't conduct heat enough.

I've heard of people putting thin flooring or shower stall material over flexwatt and siliconing it to seal it. There is a small risk of heat buildup getting too hot, but if you use a thermostat along with the flexwatt (which is a good idea no matter where you use flexwatt), it shouldn't be an issue.

I am just starting to use Flexwatt more than traditional heat pads and don't think Flexwatt would project heat downward from the ceiling enough to heat up 12 to 24 inches to the floor. It might heat 4 inches downward. Since heat rises, everything will collect at the top of the cage.

OK thanks for your input.Thats what I was thinking to begin with but I thought I would ask and see if maybe someone had an idea. The flexwatt under the shower board sounds like the way I might want to go,I just really dont want to cut into the bottom of the cages.
Thanks again.
