Putting plex on rubbermaid?

jmadams13 Nov 11, 2006 07:00 PM

Has anyone put a clear plex or acrylic like material on a large non clear rubbermade to make a window? My idea is to cut a large hole in one of those large non-clear rubbermaid containers to make cheap large enclosures for my ever growing collection. Has anyone done this? I hope I make sense. If not, I apologize.

TIA, Joe

Here is something similar to what I think you might have in mind. This cage was constructed using an IRIS VE175, pieces of pvc angle stock, sliding door track, 1/4 inch thick acrylic and pop rivets. Oh yeah, the lid was cut out leaving a reinforcing strip in the middle and 1/4 inch mesh hardware cloth was used on the top. The acrylic door is meant to simply be lifted out of the track for servicing.

I have some cages that I created which had slightly curved fronts. I did attach 1/8 inch thickness acrylic to the front of them using pop rivets. The curve of the tubs was gentle enough and the thin acrylic flexible enough that it worked just fine. As long as the curve is not more than a simple gentle curve it should work okay.

That is awesome! I've got two ve175s myself, that's an idea if I ever need to get front-access in them.

I have and used rivets and silicone.

I have never istalled one onto a curved tub, however.
