introducing a new gecko or two

Pavel Nov 11, 2006 07:02 PM

Hi all,

I may be adopting a couple of geckos. Presently my leo [a female] is in a 20 gal tank. I've had her for probably 5 years now. She's never had any tank mates. The adoptees would be a female and possibly a male. So....

1) Would a 20 gal tank be large enough to house 3 leos?

2) How should I go about introducing the adoptees to her territory?

3) Should I expect trouble?

1) I've heard yes, but since she's been alone for 5 years, you really have to think about how that will effect her. It's like two siblings moving into your room.

2) You'd have to move the terrain around so it didn't feel like her territory any more.

3) Yep. :P

First you'll want to quarantine the two new ones for at least 90 days and get fecals done.

Second to introduce new Leos to one that has been housed alone for so long you'll want to gut the tank clean everything and rearrange it so it's no longer familiar to the original Leo.

Three can be housed in a 20 long with no problems, but you want to make sure that they get along, and be prepared to house them separate if they need it.

I would not house the male if it ends up being a male with the females unless you are prepared for babies. If not, don't let them breed. It's not fair and takes too much out on a female to allow her to breed and not incubate the eggs. You'll also want to make sure that both females and male are up to par for breeding.
