Hi all,

I'm hoping that you can give me some input about my redfoot's eye. Padmé is almost two years old and the other day my husband noticed that her right eye is not really swollen, but doesn't open fully. There is no discharge from her eye or from any other area (her nares, etc.). Her left eye is fine, as you can see from the pictures. (yes, she is shedding a bit right now)

The humidity in her habitat is at about 80%. I haven't noticed any change in her habits, including eating...she weighs about 415 grams.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Stephanie

Just like in turtles it's always possible that she's not getting enough vitamin A naturally in her diet.
Are you feeding foods that do contain a good amount of A?
Do you put reptile vitamin/mineral powders on her food weekly?

I saw this happen once in my painted turtle several years ago. I bumped up his vitamin intake & within a week this problem stopped, so based on that experience if this happened with my tortoise that would be the first thing I'd try before I got worried about there being any major problems.

I do feed her foods that contain a lot of vitamin A and give her supplements as well. However, I can boost that for a little while and see what happens. I just thought the eye was odd because the other one is not affected and my other redfoot (who shares the same habitat) doesn't have any problems.

I'll let you know what happens! Thanks for the input!

Hi, Steph!
She may have a speck of substrate or other foreign body in her eye.
Try flushing the eye with warm saline, sterile if possible.
Good luck! Let us know how she does!
