Bart, necropsy update...

lele Aug 07, 2003 10:29 AM

...I want to say a general thanks to all of you who emailed (and posted) suggestions and contacts for me. The sad thing is that he has been dead for nearly 48 hours so his little body, even though chilled, will have deteriorated too much. Had my car not died on me last night there would have been some hope b/c he would have been preserved in time and I did have someone to do it. My car was towed to the dealer today so I couldn't even get to the vet until Saturday (car-less for two days - and living in the sticks of NH I am stranded!)

One of the contacts suggested doing one myself. I know that some folks on this forum have done this and I am thinking about it. I know that ChamNews has an article with photos etc. of the inside of a larger spp. cham. Bart is so tiny and I don't know if I can bring myself to cut into his little body - yes, I know he is dead... :/ I have a friend with a dissecting microscope so I will see if I can borrow it. Although I would find little that would mean anything, unless it was real obvious, it would be an educational experience. I'll see, but he is deteriorating by the minute.

So that's the scoop. I am still conversing with some "experts" re: symptoms, etc. so some speculative consensus may be drawn and I will certainly share it with all of you.

BTW, please don't ask me the name of the person who agreed to do it or for that matter even who I contacted. I say this out of respect for their privacy so they aren't suddenly hounded by keepers looking for free advice, necropsies, etc. Don’t ask, because I won't tell I am sure you can all appreciate and understand this.

I am still very sad and it's hard to come into my office and look at my big, beautiful, empty vivarium. I am thinking of getting some thing inexpensive, easy to care for and that will eat my large supply of pinheads and fruit flies! LOL! Any ideas?

Thanks so much for being here

I had looked into frogs at one point and recently saw an article in Fauna magazine on the poison darts. Do you own any? I know there is a frog forum on KS but any personal experience from someone I "know" (at least cyber-ly LOL!) would be great!

But they sound great!
Eat about the same thing your pygmy chams did, and slightly smaller, I believe.
I don't know if you could keep a group together, definitely something to ask about in the poison frog forum here on KS.
As much as I wanted to keep pygmy chams, I just don't know enough about them, and like someone already stated, there's just not enough information out there on keeping them. Too new of a species to try at this point, IMHO.
Lele, too bad you don't live in So. Cal. I feel really bad about your experience with your little group, and I wanted to give you a female Jax. I think you'd enjoy them very much.
