Thermostat failure?.....

ABCC Nov 12, 2006 07:47 AM

Not sure where else to post this question, so thanks in advance. I've been using Habistat pulse proportional thermostats for my Boas since 1995. I think one has recently finally failed. When I plug the main in without a heater attached, the red indicating light stays on continuously - normal. When I plug a heater into it (tried several), the light goes out - not normal. When I move the temperature dial over its range, the indicator light fades in and out but does not stay on - also not normal. Just time for a new thermostat? Any input would be very much appreciated. Adam

Yep sounds like toast to me.
Thats the way those ZooMed/ReptiLife act when they start their meltdown.
10 years,I think you got your moneys worth outta that unit.

I think I'm going to start switching over to Helix. Living Earth Electronics makes some good stuff, but Helix always seems to be the most highly recommended. Thanks - Adam

We just had our boaphile thermostat blow on us last night, have 4 cages hooked to it and only had it for 6 months... id say 10 years is a good run!

Yes Helix is a trademark most people know,(in a trendy context IMO)
Straight across the board I believe Ranco has proven its units to be just as/if not more reliable over long-term.Certainly debatable by the faithfull followers of which can easily be termed as "Novice 3-5 year use".Within the "narrow scope" of KS there have been how many recent references to"meltdown" issues with the Helix brand ?I know of several 30 year Vet's of this trade that dont/wont have a single Helix in their facilty,FWIW there are none here either. With many debatable points to the subject again within the limited scope of KS.......One reference/question is never given and that is"How many Helix units are used "Commercially" verses Ranco or Johnson Controls ?
Look with-in the Food Service and HVAC fields(Heavy/Load Cycles) and youll find references that dont exactly line-up with the Helix sales pitch.
Call your local A/C Service Supplier and ask them which unit brand they recommend for reliabilty.

My Rancos have always outperformed the Helix's I used to have. After about 10 months of running, the two Helix's showed E3 errors. Granted they would still run and do thier job, and I could've sent them back to be corrected as they were still under warranty. I went with the Rancos and havn't had a problem for the 3 years I've had them. For whatever reason proportionals just don't seem to last long for me, where as a on/off type Thermostat has done well.

Great info, I'll give Ranco a close look. Adam

I say Ranco all the way they have worked for years here, and for the price you can't beat them.
