RobertIIII Nov 12, 2006 02:43 PM

So, I was thinking of making a acrylic cage for my pacman frogs, I have 3 and may get another and I was thinking of making a cage like the one picutred below. Now my question is how hard would it be to make something like this? and what materials do you all reccomend? Thanks

If that setup pictured is all one piece, there would be a bit of a learning curve.

I would use a high quality acrylic and find a shop that can CNC mill the parts for you. This makes assembly much easier and is well worth the upcharge.

A sheet of 1/4 inch plexyglass, aquarium grade silicon, and a fine tooth circular saw, and hardware (hinges, latches)

Well, the best way to join acrylic is with solvent specially made to chemically weld the acrylic pieces together. Which is why having perfectly straight edges is very important! Do a search for "acrylic aquarium", there are some good tutorials out there that show how to bond acrylic pieces together so they look really good.

What you're seeing in that picture is a temporary show display. They're usually just filled with aspen or gravel and the snake is chucked in on top to look pretty until someone buys it. For your Pac-man frogs you're going to be dealing with a seriously high humidity environment which has the unfortunate effect of causing major warpage with acrylic plastics. If you could build in some really major ventilation that might help lessen the warpage but ultimately that's going to cause your cage to dry out so then you've got humidity issues again. If you wanted something simplistic like that display unit, I'd look into polycarbonate storage boxes like the ones you can find at The Container Store, or for that matter simple Critter Keeper cages. For warm humid environments though, the best cages are still going to be glass which is what the majority of amphibian vivarium keepers use.
