Question on feeding dragons...

RobertIII Nov 12, 2006 03:59 PM

was wondering do crickets have to be part of a diet for dragons? I read that you could keep dragons on just a variety of greens. Anyone care to comment on this?

Then you need to feed it some animal proteins. This could be crickets, silks, roaches, etc, etc.

Crickets don't need to be part of the diet but they are a good staple. However there are plenty of other feeder insects that are great for growing bearded dragons. Insects such as phoenix worms, butter worms, silkworms, various species of roaches, hornworms (not wild caught, only those raised to be feeders) can be used to feed your dragon. Superworms are a great treat but should not be fed to young dragons or as a staple insect.

Once dragons reach 12-14 months they don't need as much insects, about 10% of their daily intake of food needs to be insect protein. Breeding females should get more, as well as a rich source of calcium to help with egg manufacturing.
