Kimberly Rock Monitor Breeding..FR?

NextRev Nov 12, 2006 05:45 PM

I recently aquired 2.1 kimberly rock monitors. I had gotten one male and then came across a pair that was being sold together so I went for it becuase females seem to be so hard to come by. They seem to all be getting along, but my main goal is to breed them and was wondering if anyone could offer any advice, especially FR. I'm not sure how to post pics on this forum so I'll provide some links to my photos...

Just a note about this first photo: I have a water dish on the cool end of the cage as well, but I thought I'd provide one on the hot side...

This is the first male I got, I was holding him in this container for a sec while I put some more dirt in the cage...

Here's all three of them together in an enclosure I had them in while I built the new big one...

I've got basking spots at 130-140 using 45w outdoor flood lights, ambient air temps range from 77-94 or so, dirt/sand mixture for substrate, 2 water dishes, 7 or 8 hides, and the enclosure measures 78"x24"x48". After buidling it, I realize that I didn't need 48" of hieght, but it's working. One last thing is that I just went by what the people said about the sexes of the animals. I was wondering how I could properly sex them just to make sure what I have?

Kimberlys require and respond well to standard odatria husbandry, as in, same as ackies. Same temps, same food, same nesting to a point. Kimberlys are a little more versetle then ackies, they understand dirt nesting and leaflitter type nesting.

The main difference is, strenght. Kimberlys do not withstand errors in decision making that ackies can. Consider, depending on caging and husbandry, keeping monitors is no more then a series of keeper decisions. Stronger monitors can withstand and florish with a fair amount of keeper error. Kimberlys and Pilbaras do not.

So if you have your conditions right, kimberlys are highly(beyond belief)productive monitors, with a medium lifespan, (5 to 10 years) They can produce 50 to over 80 offspring a year, without problem(if supported) Cheers

Okay, sounds good. But what do you think of my cage setup, does it look alright? Also, as I said I have 2.1 right now. Do you think it would be a bad idea to add another female to the enclosure if I came across one? I was also curious as to how often the females cycle or if there is a specific breeding season for them?

Thought I would correct these for you.... Nice looking Kimberley's by the way!

Is that a converted closet?? Very nice looking monitors! My goal is for a 1.1 or 1.2 in the next year.

Oh and I know it's off topic but I can't contain my excitement. One of my female JCP locked up with my male today. Thanks for the help with them Frank.
