'Substrate' question

SincereArtisan Nov 13, 2006 10:41 AM

Ok, I know this topic is extremely debatable. Endlessly debatable, at that. But, its my first time owning/caring for a dragon. The substrate I decided uppon was tile. I have a small hatchling, in a 20 gal L tank, and 6x6 tiles line the bottom perfectly.

My temps are correct. The only serious gap between tiles is where the corners meet (they're slightly rounded off, and about the head of a pin can fit through between them. Then, where they meet one of the side walls, there is about a 3/8 inch gap. I made sure the gap was on the cooler side, and the wall I put her bowls against, so there is not much of a chance of her visiting it. The tiles are heavy, and lodged against each other, so she cannot 'dig' them up.

They're very easy to clean. I take them all out, wash them in the sink, and wipe out the tank before placing them back in.

Just wondering if any of you have ever used tile, and whether or not you've had good experiences with using it. The idea occurred to me shopping for linoleum to line the bottom of the cage, but I was worried it would buckle, and I happened to pass through the tile isle...voila!

So please, tell me what you think?

Tiles are fine. They hold heat well and if you clean them regularly there shouldn't be any concerns of bacteria growing in between the tiles. If you don't want to take the tiles out, you can always seal them with any aquarium safe caulking.
