Beardie keeps wanting to get out

Karin72 Nov 13, 2006 12:39 PM

My Beardie is always looking out the window. It amkes me feel guilty. She has a custom enclosure (2ft. by 4ft floor space and 2ft high with branches, etc.). I only got one Beardie because I read they are happier by themselves.
She chases her crickets and then she is back at the windows. Do you think she is bored? What can I offer for entertainment?

I'd be the same way if I was locked in a cage all day. Wait... I'm on house arrest I know exactly how they feel! lol. Ok well I always take my beardie out, although now that it's turning to winter and the snow will be comming out I wont be anymore, to bask in the nice California sun. I always take her paces with me too, on her little lizard leash lol. I dont have my beardie where the window is by her tank because I think if its a hot day the sun might hella heat it up.... Not surer if their is any science or facts behind that but I always take the extra precaution with her because I dont want to lose her. She was only $150 with the cage, a bowl, and a branch and a weeks worth of food for a baby dragon, but she has really taken a spot in my heart :D So make sure she's not gonna get away outside. My beardie is an Adult Snow Phase and she literally GLOWS when she's out basking in the Natural sun!

Bearded dragons are alert critters. They enjoy watching what is going on around them. On nice sunny days taking them outside is always good. Nothing beats natural unfiltered sunlight. If you do take her out, make sure she has an option to go into shed or somewhere cooler. Don't put her in a glass tank outside though, as glass tanks heat up fast in direct sunlight. A screen cage or rubbermaid container can be used, to ensure they can't escape. A lizard leash is good to but again, make sure they have access to a cooler area if they feel too hot.

When you have them outside, never leave them unattended for any amount of time. It doesn't take much to spook a bearded dragon and cause it to run off somewhere. Also, predatory birds or scavenger birds may decide to make a snack out of your dragon. Dogs and cats can do so as well, if they are left out to roam freely.

For entertainment in the cage, you could introduce a new climbing log, rock, bricks etc, for your dragon to investigate. Any small addition will prompt them to investigate. A small edible plant will also be a treat for them. They can eat it or just trample it to death for the day as well.
