stupid book says u can keep igs with beardies!!

HerpGirl Aug 07, 2003 11:15 AM

i got the iguana care book by philip de vosjoli(sp?)and i was reading it and it says sumthing like "green iguanas can be kept with other lizards like australian bearded dragons" and it had a pic of a juvie ig laying on a beardie thats perched on a branch. the beardie looks really sick too, his eyes are closed and his eyelids are discolored. i cant believe he would put something like this in a book.besides parasites they also have way different temps, and igs need humidity that would easily kill a beardie. i almost screamed when i saw this pic!!
he also has a section on breeding iguanas, and he says he recommends it.
then, there is a part where it says that even though most people think it is unnesesary he recomends feeding iguanas crickets in small amounts....grrr.
sorry had to vent...

Look at the year the book was printed. Many books are outdated. Just as with any website where you go for information, remember anything can be incorrect. I have found that talking with keepers of that animal who have been dealing with them for a long time is far better than most books.

at least i wasnt a new keeper getting the book to rely on. i just got it becuase it might be good to have on hand in case anything comes up that i dont have memorized kinda thing. i also got an anole book by him a couple years back, that was actually pretty well written so i thought i would get the ig book too...boy was that a mistake. welll kinda, its not that bad except those few parts, but i can see ppl reading it and having 20 ppl tell them not to do sumthing like the beardie thing but they wont listen becuase they read what they wanted to hear once and that is good enuff for them until it they both die miserably... ive seen it happen too many times. *sigh. o well, not much i can do except keep my guys happy i guess

maybe it meant they can be in an outdoor basking cage?ive seen that before but the ig doesnt need that much humidity that would kill a beardie!!!maybe a red eyed tree frog or something exotic like that but come on mexico isnt that humid....
