probable box turtle needs assistance

GreatEggMan Nov 13, 2006 02:12 PM

I dont know that much about this fine individual but I did rescue him from cramped quarters in South Philadelphia.
From pictures I've looked at I believe he's a box turtle. Not sure of what type. Please provide best guesses.
Most important - he wants to hibernate but seems confused. When I first got him he ate some boston lettuce greens and a few grapes. Since then he has little interest in food. I've offered more lettuce greens, celery tops, broccoli flowers, mushrooms and raw and cooked beef bits as well as Wardley's land turtle pellets. Almost nothing accepted.
He disappears for a day or two at at time...he has the run of a little used room that is heated and has direct sunlight. He hides somewhere but then re-emerges. But barely eats anything.
I'm concerned for my pal and want the best for him. Pet or not.

Neat find! What you have there, my friend, is a Russian tortoise. Testudo horsfieldi (or Agriomemys horsfieldi). Please see the tortoise forum. Those people know their stuff. You have your work cut out for you, but I've heard that they are very rewarding pets if well cared for.

Definately a Russian and it looks like its in nice shape. It looks as if it is either a recent import or was kept outdoors. These Tortoise do well in the North East when hibernated outdoors. Sounds like he landed in the right arms! Best wishes, Leo

Be sure to check your local lost & found ads. Someone could be looking for this tortoise. It looks like someone has cared for it & you know.. accidents happen. Workers/kids/someone not thinking leaves a gate open or who knows.
Then again sometimes people just let their pets go & so then it's finders keepers.
