Are there any Clouded Boas left in USA?

JamieFlorin Nov 13, 2006 07:18 PM

I had a 2.2 group of clouded boas back in 1997-1999 and was wondering if there are any left in the country of if anyone is still working with them? I think Terry Vandeventer and Terry Lilley had them at one point. Could anyone out there give me any help in finding them? They are so rare and I forget who I sold them to. If I sold them to YOU and YOU see this, please contact me to let me know what your luck was with them. Thanks

Thanks alot. I HAD some and really liked them. They have "odd" behavior for "boas". They were very strong, good climbers and could contort. I would actually like to purchase a pair again, as this was the most unique species I have ever worked with. I have a feeling that they will be an extremely difficult aquisition.

Hermann was one of the European breeders I knew to have worked with them. In spring of 2005 I had emailed another German breeder about some pictures for a presentation I was doing for a local elementary school, among the pictures he sent were some of Orophias and Nebulosa, I inquired and found he had worked with them in the past but had sold them.
I don't want to post his name here, and the pictures were for exclusive one time use. However, I can assure you the information leads no further.

I will talk with a friend of mine at Harvard and see if he can locate the specimens there as that article suggested as the storage place for the boas once deseased. Maybe their records will turn up something.

A friend of mine, Clive Osbourne of Tropical Anura in the UK had both orophias and nebulosa in his collection. I was particularly interested in the nebulosa. Very dark but with a mahogany/red hue to them, very aggressive.
Sadly Clive died in September of last year from cancer and I am not sure what happened to the snakes in that part of his collection. It was a very sad loss as he had a remarkable collection of local specific boas.

Hallo, I don't know if it helps. I recently purchased 1.1 Boa c. nebulosa from the german breeder we were mentioning before. I'm not aware of any babies in the US since a long time and in Europe there was (for what I know) one single breeding in 2004 (my boas are this litter) after some like 10 years of nothing. It took me a very long time to find nebulosa and those are the most incredible boas I've ever worked with. Many people consider them, like orophias, a species apart and I have to say they behave completely different from common constrictors. If you need further information about them don't hesitate.

Regards from Italy
