Today was the second time I tried to feed my "03" clutch of YT's.
They had their first shed a while ago and I tried to feed them feeder fish in a glass dish with some water in it.
I don't think they ate because they probably couldn't figure out what to do.
I tried again today, but this time I misted the boxes and then threw the feeder fish onto the floor of the boxes.
I put about 4 or 5 fish per box for lots of visual stimulation.
As soon as the fish started thrashing about the snakes were suddenly interested. They went right after the fish that showed the most movement. If the fish slowed down and moved only very slightly the snake would lose interest. Even if the snake had it's mouth/nose ON the fish, and the fish layed still except for gill movement the snake wouldn't eat it.
This leads me to really believe that they are more turned on to food by movement as opposed to the scent of the food item at this early an age. Like I said, they wouldn't eat the fish that layed still even when they had their mouths and noses on the fish!
I also got one of Dons hatchlings to resume feeding with this method. Don had it self feeding on ft crawlers before the original owner neglected and then traded off the snake to someone else before I got it.
It wouldn't feed on ft when I got it, but the live food did the trick.
Now I have to try it with the live pinks and crawlers.
Thanks to Don Bordner for all the feeding tips!
They worked!!!!
Bobby
