Question on topical creams?

sleepygecko Nov 14, 2006 12:28 PM

I have noticed that several times neosporin was suggested as an antibiotic cream for applying to geckos and lizards. Is this common? Thankfully, we've never had a reason to ask before, but I would like some clarification (the board is slow anyways and I always forget to look it up in the books.)

When I had warm blooded animals, we were forbidden by the vet to apply neosporin, but instead could only apply products labeled "polysporin" I guess the antibiotics are different? I was told neosporin could be very damaging/lethal to the animal if ingested. I had assumed the same for geckos. Of course, geckos don't clean their fur, so maybe they don't eat the cream and that would be the simplest answer, but does anyone have a better reason? Thanks in advance, of course.

I take in wounded herps from my area and I have always used neosporin for they cuts. Never had any side effect. I agree with you that animals probably end up digesting it from their fur. But on herps, it's near impossible. Just my two cents.
