introducing a new male

cee4 Nov 14, 2006 04:28 PM

Okay I have a trio of females and one male together in a very large cage. Now I just bought the most beautiful male hooded Dumbo. Should I pull out the other male first for a few weeks before I introduce this new male?
Also there are two litters of two week old babies in there and the remaining female is pregnant should I wait till all the babies are weaned?

Don't have 2 males together with females in the same cage. You can have a cage of just males together, or 1 male with multiple females.

If you want dumbo babies you won't get any until you breed the offspring of the dumbo father together or his daughter back to the dumbo male. Dumbo is a recessive trait.

First define really big cage.
Second, if the girls have young younger than a couple weeks they will be very defensive of a new boy and beat him up. So, yes, I would say wait till all the babys are older anyway. If the new guy is worth anything he won't bug babys. I have had groups with more than one male and never any trouble. Usually in my own animals if someone is gonna be brutal it is one of the older girls.

is 3.5ftx2x2 its just a homemade job but its cozy and has a shelf to add more floor space. My other female just had her litter last night so I guess it will be awhile anyways...BTW can I put both males in together in a different cage.Ive never had more then one male at a time so not sure how they would get along. My original male is a big sweety and the new dumbo seems very laid back so Im thinking they might get along good.
I am getting two female dumbos next month(I hope) so I might just wait and have two seperate groups. One with regular rats and one trio of dumbos.
If I breed this male dumbo with a female dumbo will they produce dumbos? I really want to use these to trade the petstore for jumbo rats(I dont want to raise them that big)...

Yes, breeding 2 dumbos will give you all dumbos.

As for the 2 males, they should be fine together, just clean the cage thoroughly before introducing them.
