Need help feeding a northern ringneck

Heat Nov 14, 2006 04:29 PM

I caught her 2 months ago. The day after we got her, I put her in with a redback salamander, & she had twisted up on it & started the feed within seconds. Well, that was the end of the summer (warm) & now we're keeping her indoors & she doesn't seem to want to eat.

This is my first ever snake & the whole family is hooked. She does not bite, period. She seems to really enjoy being handled too. She likes to sleep in her snake cave as long as no crickets are in there. She's had a salamander (I stocked up) in with her for a week & has not eaten. I don't even know how often to expect her to eat. Someone suggested guppies. Just throw 1 in & wait? She loves to drink water as soon as I pour it or mist it in.

We are totally in love with this snake!! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Tx.

If it's not eating the salamander that means it's done feeding for the year. Which is understandable mine used to stop feeding around now.

If it's losing weight... Start to lower it's temperatures a bit. And then put the enclosure in a place where the temp stays around 50-55 degrees. And leave the snake there until Spring. But continue offering it water.

im not an expert, Mike is the expert...but, maybe you should change the prey, i was thinking my Mexican ringneck will feed on f/t anoles, it took a pair a month ago, since that day it has not taken any anole,i have offered anoles, with out result, i was thinking that maybe it will brumate, but its so active and i offered a big tantilla and ate it, yeterday i offered 2 arboreal frogs and it took it from my hand....

regards.

I'm a total newbie. Please explain your suggested prey with more details, and maybe suggest where I can purchase them. Thanks.

I do think I should hibernate her soon, but I'd like to see her have at least 1 last feeding.

I was wondering if she would be ok in a 10 gallon tank w/ toads for the hibernation period? After her last escape, I had to put her in with our red footed tortoise. It's been a week & she still seems happy as ever.

Hi Heat,

Hibernate her on her own, unless the toads are a lot smaller than she is. You just never know.

One of the problems with ringnecks is that the subspecies are all so different that advice for one won't apply to another. Sabeteur is working with a very different subspecies (arguably another species), so yours will probably not eat anoles, frogs, and small snakes; Rosie will most likely only eat salamanders, and if it's not eating them, it probably wants to go to sleep for the winter.

Good luck,
Billy
