atb perch question.

bsharrah Nov 14, 2006 05:10 PM

Can anyone who keeps atb's tell me what you use for perches? A description would be fine but pics would obviously be better. Several sites indicate they do not prefer the straight perches that are normally used for gtp's and etb's. I have several of the pvc cages built by Jim Scharphorn and would like to use a few of them for atb's. I just need to come up with some new ideas for perches.

Thanks,
Bart

ATB's prefer the muiltiple pont of contact perch method, typically three points of contact. Thus a cross in the perch or the Y of a typical branch is exceptable. Round perches can be used when lashed together in an X fashion or you can get creative with PVC pipe joints and a torch. Sorry no pics.

Good Luck

I've found that most of my atb's prefer to spend their days tucked away, hidden from view and have had great succes using the half logs. At night though they like to prowl and I have found they prefer wider platforms to use a home base. Cork slabs laid across the half logs work well and then I usually have a couple of larger diameter natural branches as well. Across the board though, they all seem to really like 1 x 2's. I think they prefer the wide, flat surface which is always placed perfectly horizontal in their cages.

My ATB seems to be happy with the Bamboo "X" I have in his terrarium, although the daylight hours find him under the foilage which he always knocks down to cover himself up. You can get the bamboo from Home Depot or K-mart (or any other store with a garden center) and cut to fit the size you want/need.

I like the bamboo as well and with a little imagination and some zip ties, you can create some neat little "jungle gyms" in their enclosures. I also use them zip tied side by side for my two little neonates to give them a nice wide perch to coil up on in their shoe boxes.

I use madrone brances and just cross them up. My atb will sit either where they cross or on top of the pot the ficus tree is growing in.
