I took this photo in prime Eastern Box turtle habitat in the mountains of Central Pa. This location is very whimsical and virgin. I have photographed many Box Turtles (as well as other species) here. Enjoy, Leo

PA is a beautiful state, tons of undisturbed woods(relatively), Leo about how high elevation wise do you find the boxies, outside of the poconos I've found very few boxies in elevation. Always wood turtles, but not many boxies especially in more rocky terrain like some of your pictures have shown.

Is that moss growing on the downed tree?
I live in a desert where the only naturally growing "trees" here are mesquite. I don't see things like this photo of yours so I wasn't sure what that purplish colored stuff is.

Looks like a kind of tree fungus viewed from the 'top' of a felled tree.

It does look kind of puffy like fungus. When I was a kid we lived in several different places where forests were nearby, lakes were nearby, but since I was a teenager I haven't lived in places like that. I can't remember what it's like to see so much green all around me all the time.
I see it now when we travel but from the highways you can't be up close & personal lol.

I remember someone asked did we see any box turtles in NM in Aug. & I think I forgot to answer that.
Unfortunatly no we didn't see any. We saw one lizard when were in Lincoln visiting the Hubbard Museum's awesome Billy the Kid displays.
We saw several deer, a fox, & lots of hummingbirds but only one lizard no turtles at all. Darn it.

Yeah, that was me. I figured that if you had seen some, you would have found a way to let us know
