i use logs (grapewood etc) in my tanks, and rocks on the cool side, i find they love sitting on the cool rocks, especially to sleep

mine dont poop in the warm areas, they do in the cool areas, they poop on rocks, easy to clean. also i find the wood gets hot enough and holds the heat well enough, i find the rocks get a little too hot, but its all personal preference, like i said, my guys love the cold rocks at night, and use them over using their hides or burrowing down in their substrate

Babies cages I keep real simple and use a flat rock for them to bask on. In my adult cages I use wood for them to climb up on and get closer to the light. I would also use it in my adults cage, no reason why I don't other then I'm using them for my babies, and I have no more. Rocks are good for providing belly heat. They hold heat better then wood.

I have a nice flat, high rock that I got from the beach (disinfected) AND a piece of wood he can climb on. Both at different levels under the heat lamp, so he can get as close as he'd like. I find he likes it the closer the better. Mine has an affinity for relieving himself on his rock, too.
