Sandfish Help

LV426 Nov 15, 2006 07:41 PM

I have 2 sandfish. I have had them a few months and they have been fine. Yesterday I came home and the female (I presume) was sitting on top of the sand with her legs pinned to her sides and her feet twitching uncontrollably. Her mouth was open and there was some sand crusted around her mouth and nose. I cleaned off her mouth and nose and gave her some water which she lapped up but she seems to be incapable of moving her legs. She can move her body and wiggles to get under the sand but her legs refuse to move. I can bend them and there seems to be no visible injuries. She is responsive to touch and can feel me touching her feet and legs and I can bend her limbs at the joints but they are stiff. Still she just lays there, all four limbs pressed against her body and her feet twitching constantly. I don't know what is wrong with her at all and was wondering if anyone can help. I took her to the vet today but he said he has no experiance with sandfish at all and has no idea how to even go about treating her. Any sandfish experts out there that can help?

Her cage is 2 feet by 4 feet by 2 feet, it has 8 inches of sand in it. There is a small log that they use for hiding under and a rock under the basking area. The temps are 85*F and under the basking area it's 120*F. There is a small shallow dish with water and I feed them meal worms, small crickets, and phoenix flies and the occassional bit of papaya and pureed carrots.

The male shows no signs of any of this.

If anyone knows what I can do please contact me immediately at xenomorphs@gmail.com

Thanks.

i dont know much about sandies. How old are they? sounds similar to the symptoms leopard geckos go through with metabolic bone disease... lost use of hind legs.

I have no idea how old they are to be honest but I don't think it's metabolic bone disease. This happened over night. Not to mention that they have access to calcium supplements with their food and they have a UVB light over the basking area. It also affects all 4 limbs not just the rear limbs.

Impaction has the same symptoms.

If you have mineral oil, add a few drops to warm bath water and let her soak in it. The hope is that she will ingest the water & oil... this should let things slide on through. If she doesn't drink - see if you can get her to take 1 drop of mineral oil mixed in with some warm water in an eye dropper.

I would try the warm soaks a couple times per day.

It could be a bug - could be some sand and a bug mixed together. If her system clears itself, she will recover.

Hope everything gets better.

You did not add vitamins and minerals to their diet, right?
