kingsnake eating frequency

labata84 Nov 15, 2006 11:17 PM

My son and I have an albino cal king. We've had it since it was less than a year old. It is now about 4 yrs old. It always seemed to be content with eating two large mice every ten days .
Snake seems generally healthy and active. The concern is that it has been 3 going on 4 weeks since it has had any interest in eating. We have changed nothing in the environment or diet. We feed it out of the cage. Could this slowdown be due to the time of year. I don't think it is close to shedding but sometimes we can't tell for sure. We have had to removed stools from the cage so we know that food has moved through the snake. The time before last that we tried to feed it, it took a mouse in its mouth but then refused it. It has also acted like there was no food in the box with the last time we tried. We dont have good recollection of this from last fall. but does this sound like a normal feeding pattern for an adult king. If any one wants more info I will do my best to provide it. thanks for any input in advance labata84

check your husbandry and try a smaller live food item or a smaller live rat puppy.Make sure that if you raise your own food for it that you don't house the mice or rats in the same room as the snake because it seems to confuse my snakes when i did that.More then likely your snake is fine but when in real doubt take it too the vet. snakes are individuals, like people and when not hungry they dont eat! have you ever brumated it? sounds to me it is going though
the motions of semi- hibernating which i am sure that you know in reptiles is called"brumation" I have 6 Honduran milk snakes which are doing great. All are eating normally for the individual, except one who about month ago has slowed down eating. i rechecked everything and it seems fine, hides on hot and cold side of tank,
you know the drill.i will try a smaller food item, live. Also when you try to feed it use a much smaller food then normal because after a longer fast too big an item is too hard on its tummy and it might regurge it. reveiw everything and maybe try a small live rat puppy

good luck

Greg
