Strawberry Tree Fruit as Turtle Food

hattheturtle Nov 16, 2006 02:57 AM

There are dozens of Strawberry Trees that line the road near my house, and they are all dropping bright red fruit right now. I tried to do some research but came up with nothing. Does anyone know if the fruit from Strawberry Trees is ok for turtle consumption? They are just fine for humans, but are rather bland and so not eaten often.

Can you post a photo, or a link to a photo, of the tree and fruit you're talking about? Or better yet, do you know the Latin botanical name for the tree?
Strawberry tree could be one of several species....
Thanks!

Sure, here is the wikipedia article on it:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strawberry_tree

The ones near my house look exactly like the ones pictured in that article. The Latin name is Arbutus unedo.

By the way, is it common for turtles to get rather... lazy this time of year? Maybe because my boxies is used to hibernating or something, but he's just been sleeping an aweful lot. I'll wake him up in the mornings and in the evnings so that he can eat, and he'll nibble on strawberries and crickets but then turn around after not eating much and go to bed.
