PVC frame

bradsradreps Nov 16, 2006 08:29 AM

Just wondering if any one has ever used PVC pipes for a reptile cage frame? I was thinking of using PVC and plywood to try to keep it lightweight. I was thinking of using plexiglass, but I just think that snakes are more comfortable in a darker plywood enclosure. Anyways, let me know if anyone has had any luck with PVC, thanks!

For larger lizards, yes. For a snake, no. I think it would be done but there are ways to join acrylic and/or plywood that would not require the weight and complexity that would come with a PVC pipe frame, not to mention the security issues.

If you're really stuck on this idea, I would use square PVC tubing and then use rivets and PVC solvent to attach Sintra to the frame.

If you google [cat cage square PVC tubing] you should get a link.

I have it saved somewhere but don't have the time to look it up.

I never knew there was square PVC, I'll check my local home depot, I may just go with 2x2 wood bc it's a lot easier to just cut the pieces and put in some screws than to mess with glues and riveting. I'd also be worried about the glues giving off toxic odors. Thanks for the help though!

Don't use 2x2 wood. 2x2 is almost always pine or fir and rarely straight grained or kiln dried. Even if you find a straight one you can expect shrinkage and warpage when exposed to the heat and humidity differentials snake cages or know for.

Trust me, don't do it.

Square PVC tubing is hard to find.

heres a place i found some time ago , never ordered from them so dont know anything about the product they have or how sturdy it is due to doesnt give thickness of material. Its used to make dog/ small animal fences i think . they also have the fittings for it aswell

As chris said below 2x2 will make you wish ya had not wasted the money.

That's the link I was going to look up. I have seen one of their cat cages at my local humane society. With the screen attached the cage was fairly rigid, although I have heard the tubing by itself is a bit flexible, about the same as 1" round tubing.

I think it would be very durable with thin skins of Sintra glued and riveted to the tubing.

However, the stuff is so expensive that I'm not sure it would not make more sense just to go with aluminum tubing and nylon connectors.
