what kind of snake? NJ

while hiking in NJ along a river i saw this snake. anyone have any ideas what kind it is?

Garter snake, Thamnophis sirtalis - a very common, widespread and harmless species.

I like that composition of the garter on the rusted chain link fence over the water. Did you find it that way or pose it?

they are harmless but will bite if picked up and will deficate on you which is MUCH worse!

it's an eastern garter snake...thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis. Harmless snakes.
