Hypo Color question?

DanPython Nov 16, 2006 04:41 PM

I was talking with a longtime ball breeder about hypo's (aka ghosts). He was telling me that orange, yellow, butterscotch are just marketing ploys. He said you could have all three in the same clutch and when they become adults they all look about the same. You wouldn't be able to tell which is which when they are adults. I tend to beleive him as I purchased an adult yellow female this past autumn and my little orange ghost that I purchased as a hatchling and now is 1000g is starting to look just like her.

Any thoughts?

Of coarse there are always going to be some variations in color but for the most part that would be a true statement IMO. I have heard pretty much the same thing from lots of breeders I know of 4 wild imports (1.3) all imported at different times all with different color variations and the male successfully breed with all 3 females producing Yellow, Butterscotch and Orange Ghost .This is just my observation others may have different opinions but I hope this helps.

orange ,green ,and yellow ,and butterscotch are all the same......yet yes ,some lines tend to be more of one color at hatching.......probably due to mothers' color also?.......anyways.......some lines scream orange.....yet I bet they all grow up close to the same........some do stay better as adults than others........my first butterscotch is still better than his father I bet.......but in a couple years he may fade more........???

........there are some "ghost" lines that aren't the same......they aren't proven compatable..and some may not be ghosts/hypos at all.......at least one hypo out there actually looks like a type of pastel to me..

........my opinion.........as well as alot of others

I'll third the thought.

Kara once told me that NERDs orange ghost line actually came from their green ghost line - so maybe the color variation comes not actually from the hypo at all but from the variation of color bred into the line. Or something to that effect.

They're all compatible with one another. All the same gene. Some animals will consistently produce offspring with a certain look hence the distinctions between the lines but when it comes down to it they all exhibit the same type of hypomelanism. (This does not include mutations like the Citrus ghosts which, as far as I know, are a different mutation, but I'm not very qualified to speak on that topic.)
