mites or...?

frostypaws Nov 16, 2006 05:44 PM

Lately when I've changed the water in my ball's tank, I notice what looks to be like fleas or some kind of small flea-like bug in the bowl. They are probably about as big as fleas or smaller, but they are a white-ish color. I thought mites were brown? I'm paranoid of mites, so I'm always checking her out when I take her out, and I've never noticed anything on her body. Same thing with my corn snake, little white flea looking bugs in the water bowl. I never see many though, sometimes only one or two, and I don't know what the hell they are. Otherwise, my ball is totally healthy, temps and humidity are perfect. Also, I do have 2 cats. Could I accidentally introduce fleas to my snakes?

Juvenile mites can be white - also wood mites (if you are using a wood type substrate). Mites are generally more active at night so check your snake at night use good lighting and a magnifying glass if you have one - check the eye sockets, pits and neck area. If all you see are white mites - you might have caught the problem early enough that you can kill them all off before infestation.

Good luck.

Hi I do not think your snake can get flea’s from your cats . You can prevent mites by using a bird protector that you hang in a bird cage and that will keep them away and you can spay prevent -a-mite in the cage . If you need to get rid of them on your snake , just rub it down with olive oil and they will come off Quick , Then wipe the excess off with a rag . Don’t worry it will not hurt it at all. Good luck David
