Feeding, how much and when?

amyjk Aug 07, 2003 01:21 PM

My new beardie is doing great! I went out and bought him all kinds of goodies to eat and such, just not sure how much to feed him. I have seen him eat crickets, have not seen him eat eggs or greens. Should I feed him a few crickets, then set in some greens for him? I also bought some pelletted food that I wetted down and sprinkled some on top of his greens, not that he's eaten any of it though....And he should have greens everyday? Is it o.k. to set the food in and place him by it? I even tried waving some endive in front of him, hoping to tempt him. Thanks for all the help!

P.S. Are you guys tired of me yet? I try to not be too much of a pain, and I'm sure you guys get the same questions day in and day out, so I apologize for being one of "those" people.....

From snout to vent he is about 5-6" can anyone give me an approx. age on him based on his size? I was thinking about 3 months? And is it ok to handle him everyday? My 13 year old son wants to hold him so badly, but I wanted to give him a few days to acclimate and he also goes to the vet tomorrow, so I told him to wait til after that.

let him eat as much as he wants within a 10 minuite period, that means as many crickets as he wants, greens should be left in there all day. I wouldnt feed him any eggs, its not needed besides that eggs sitting in an enclosure all day long will create some really nasty bacteria. Giving him good greens and juvi pellets in a dish is great, just leave them there, keep offereing them even if he doesnt eat them, he will eventually, a shallow dish works best. Place the greens on the cool side of the enclosure, they keep fresher that way you can also try placing silkworms inside the veggie dish, sometimes this gets them introduced to the veggies and putting worms in there can definatly get them interested in that particular dish ...hope this helps some E

If a dragon doesn't eat the worms, is it ok to leave the worms there overnight? Just wondering, because I know it's bad to leave crickets overnight.

i wouldnt leave anyting in there overnight, i doubt silkworms would bite a dragon as i dont think they are physically able or even would be interested but you dont want things crawling on your beardie while they are resting, it could be stressful for them, just remove what they dont eat in the 10 min period its the best thing to do.

The cage my dragons are in have a lot of hiding places for crickets, which makes it hard to find when they're done. So I move mine to a kritter keeper or a 10 gallon aquarium with just a paper towel bottom and they eat out of that and i move htem after 10 minutes. This also teaches them that handling is good because they might get soemthing good out of it. And it doesnt stress them out, cause mine still eat like it's their last meal.
