Tips on getting baby suri to take f/t???

tonyc Nov 16, 2006 10:18 PM

Well I just finished feeding my baby suri for the third time. I initially tried to get her to eat f/t and had no success so I gave up and got a live rat pink. As soon as I lower the rat pink into her cage, she takes it. Tried the same thing next time and ended up feeding her a live pup. Today I thought I'd try a freshly killed (hard to do, those things are cute) rat pink and she showed no interest despite my wiggling and dancing with the dead thing. I gave up, lowered a live rat pink and boom she took it??? Anyone have suggestions for me??

Thanks in advance,
Tony.

I mostly deal with Colombians, but it should work for your suri as well. What you do is offer a live meal, followed up immediately (while the snake is still in the "eat" mode) with a pre-killed or thawed meal.Your snake appears large enough to do this. Ater a few times of doing this, then the pre-killed or thawed meal should be more acceptable to your baby. Best of luck, and keep in mind at this age, the most important thing is that they eat, so you have done the right thing in feeding it whatever it wants. Best of Luck. Sharon

when you thaw the f/t try putting it in a plastic bag first, instead of thawing it directly in water, this will help to keep the smell. Heat it to the same temp as a live one too. You can try just after nightfall, which can help, this is when boas are most active and they also feel safer in the dark. You can try just leaving it in front of the hide overnight too, that works for some. When you dangle use a glove to mask the heat coming from your hand and use long forceps. Cover the cage before feeding so the snake can't see you coming, and stand where they can't see you when dangling. Boawoman gave good advice too. Try everything, it's a baby, it will come around. The main thing is that it is eating.

Good luck,
Caden
