Rack becomes RETF vivarium

Matt Campbell Nov 16, 2006 11:06 PM

Here are some pics of a conversion I'm performing on a vacated snake rack of mine. I got rid of many snakes in order to concentrate on amphibian breeding. This rack is being converted to hold a group of four Red-eyed Tree Frogs. The rack was built using a stock utility cabinet sold by Home Depot. I forget the exact designation - maybe U51? Anyway the measurements were roughly 56 inches high x 28 wide x 14 deep. The tubs were underbed storage boxes made by IRIS and sold by The Container Store. Note the additon of pegboard to the back along with heating cable which was used along the back - it didn't work very well.

This photo shows the rack before the conversion started.

This photo shows the rack after the major reconfiguration. Note the lengthwise seam going through the side pieces halfway down. This was to facilitate easier moving of the unit once constructed. I live three floors up without an elevator and didn't look forward to the idea of carrying a fully set up vivarium down three flights of stairs. Note also how I've lined the inside back with a layer of 3mm Sintra glued on with Liquid Nails. The inside bottom is lined up to four inches deep with Sintra as well. All seams will be sealed with silicone except where background materials cover the seams along the back.

Finally, this shows the positioning of some of the branches before I began attaching pots for live plants and before I began applying spray foam to build up a textured background.

Very nice conversion! What are you going to use for lighting (if any) in there?

My plan is to use at least two 15 watt full spectrum compact fluorescents [manufactured by Feit], along with at least one, maybe two UVB compact fluorescents. I find the compacts put out much more lumens for the wattage than traditional tubes and because of the small size you can pack a lot of light intensity into an enclosure. The main thing here is getting enough light to stimulate good plant growth and also to stimulate a natural photoperiod that will aid in getting the frogs to breed. I'll be posting more photos of the conversion as it continues.
