I'm looking for a mealworm alternative for a few days. I orderred 10k Mealworms from wormman farms & basicaly in a nut shell the messed up & refuse to ship my order till monday now. so I gotta find something to feed the 21 geckos I have. only 1 petshop in my area & they have no mealies or crickets. I was thinking red worms or night crawlers just to hold them over for the 5 days or will they be fine not eatting for 5 or 6 days when I'm praying my shippment gets here. thanx

Can you tell us how old or an approximate weight for the geckos?

Do they sell insects in a can? (most places have that, horrible stuff, but in a pinch better than nothing)

You should see if you have a fishing bait shop in your area. They usually carry mealworms, if not crickets. If not I would at least try to catch something outside for the smaller ones to eat.

You never know what pesticides and/or parasites you're introducing by feeding insects caught outside. Just don't do it. That being said, yeah, the little ones need to eat during that time. Are you so far from all major cities that you couldn't make a trip into one in order to get some mealworms and/or crickets?

For your group of geckos, especially the young ones, you should certainly be looking for a secondary source in the next couple of days. However, I wouldn't worry too much about the adults. They should be ok for the next few days.

As an additional source, I would not try freeze dried or canned foods. I just doubt your geckos would go after something that is not moving around. Also, as mentioned earlier, earthworms are not a good source of food.

You could search out local bait and tackle stores for waxworms. These are a great food for geckos on a short term basis. They are high in fat so don't over do the feedings.

Finally, there are some on-line insect sources (e-mail me for specifics) that will ship next day for a few bucks more. Ordering Sunday or Monday will get you insects by Tuesday. You should give this a try anyway as a backup to your regular vendor.

Good luck.
