frog emergency

janmac Nov 17, 2006 01:15 PM

A teacher at my school has been out on emergency leave for a week and her frogs (class pets) need care. The frogs are approximately 2 inches long, and lime green with black spots. Can you identify them for me, tell me what kind of water to add to the aquarium and what size crickets (that's what the students say they eat) to buy, and point me to a website or two where I can learn more?
Thanks for your help,
Jan

The office staff was able to get a hold of a parent who's a vet tech and is willing to take care of the frogs in the teacher's absence. I've looked at a few pictures online and think the frogs may be Hymenochirus boettgeri, though the green on these seems a bit brighter than those in the pictures. Is there a way to attach or insert photos to messages?

Hymenochirus boettgeri are completely aquatic frogs. There are usually about the size of a quarter or a bit larger and do not eat crickets as they live underwater and crickets do not.

i don't know what kind they are but they need water w/out chlorine, so just use bottled water or reverse osmois water. if they are 2 in. long the crix should be mediums or half sized. if u can't get those then get smaller not bigger. good luck!
