A few years ago, my oldest son, 13 at the time, decided to help me feed my 30 or 40 leopards at the time.
We started on opposite sides of the racks with cups of dusted crickets, opening tops of tubs and dumping in 4 or 5 crickets.
Well, out of the corner of my eye, I saw him pick a cricket from the cup to hand feed one of the smaller, geckos. Have you ever seen a leopard that is absolutely starving? It comes right up to the front of the enclosure and watches with great interest as the top opens and the bugs come in, read to POUNCE!
This must have been with this young gecko. As the cricket... and fingers went in, the leopard sprung on the object entering the cage. I can still see this in slow motion even today...... the scream, the hand retracting instinctively, the leopard hanging on to it's 'meal'. One quick shake of his hand before I could even react and the leopard was airborne.
I made the instant decision to comfort my tramatized son first and look for the leopard second. He ran out of the room holding his finger even though there was absolutely no harm done by the lizard. A couple of minutes of comfort and I returned to find the gecko slowely investigating the floor no worse for wear.
Needless to say, he has never helped me feed the lizards after this.
