Sand compaction&nephrurus amyae???

oliverk Nov 17, 2006 04:41 PM

Anyone have any problems with sand compaction deaths using sand as a substrate for the knobtail gecko: nephrurus amyae??? I use reptilite sand, which is supposed to be edible, and digestible. Anyone have any problems with this sand mix in the past???

I've never had that problem, but then I keep mine on repticarpet. I have read though that any species of lizard can have problems with compaction in captivity. I have also found an article that told of calcisand not being as digestible as they say. For one thing their bodies can only digest and absorb so much.

Some people don't have any problems with sand, some do. It all comes down to how much sand is ingested with their food.

I just notice when my geckos eat, they eat sand regularly. I don't think I've ever had a reptile die from impaction, but it makes me nervous when I hear stories about it.
