Brumation or not

onthefly Nov 18, 2006 05:04 PM

Here in the Los Angeles area, the temps keep going from the 60's one week then to the 80's-90's the next, my lizards will not come out for a week or two so I turned off the lights then it gets warm and I have lizards running around in the dark, so I turn the lights back on and give them some food, it cools off they hide under the rocks for a few days, turn the lights off, then it warms up and I have lizards running around in the dark looking for food. I quess what im asking is do I leave them be and let the wake up in the heat and sleep when it's cool or just leave the lights on?

Thanks
Cecil

IMO I would turn on half the lights if you are able to do that. The reason being, if they want to run around they can and they have enough heat to eliminate the food you have been feeding them. I learned the hard way about letting animals go down with food in their gut. If they are out, you only need to feed every other day or third day so that they can maintain weight. In my enclosures I turn down the heat by removing light and shutting off heat to the room. The animals decide whether to go down or stay up. It just takes a temperature change for the males to enable them to breed the next season. If you are not breeding then you don't need to brumate.
