crested gecko feeding question

davidd Aug 07, 2003 02:26 PM

I got my crested gecko a few weeks ago, he was a little thin when i first aquired him but now seems to be filling out nicely(not fat but healthy. I have a question though in regards to feeding. I've tried the baby food(fruit base) with necessary calcium and vitamin supplements, however he doesn't seem to like this very much(he'll take a few nibbles at best throughout the night). On the bright side, he seems to LOVE crickets. I'll throw in 4-5 crickets and go to bed. Anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes i'll here him jumping all over the place pounding them down like it's his job. Here comes the question.. Is it ok, health wise, for him to eat primarily crickets or do i need to try and break him off of them? He's full grown, and the petstore said he had been raised on the baby food, but i'm not so sure.. any information/help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
David

It is okay for him to have a staple of primarily crickets. Just make sure to gutload the crickets and dust them (I use Miner All - Indoor). You could also try the Crested Gecko Diet (CGD) and supplement with crickets if you like.

Hope this helps!

Each Rhac has it's own personality. My male crestie hated babyfood but loved crix. The females were just the opposite. The three gargoyles I have, One eats mostly babyfood, two eat mostly crix. Just depends on their taste. As long as you are feeding the crix well and supplementing. It's not a problem. You might also try different kinds of babyfood. Peaches is usually a fave but also try apricots, banana, mango, applesauce, etc. Eventually you might find one he likes better than the others.
