Large rats?

Smitty75 Aug 07, 2003 02:34 PM

Has anyone ever fed an adult bp a "large" rat? I know that stores generally sell rats as small, medium, and large, so I hope you all know what I mean by "large."

My male is hitting small to medium rats everytime i drop one in front of him. He's only 1000 grams though, so i'm sure there are plenty out there who can take a large rat with ease.

I have fed Ball Pythons large rats in the past, however I choose now to feed smaller meals more often. Example is even though I have a few females well over 2000 grams, they still get small rats, but are offered food every 4 days (usually 2 rats per feeding). I could give these girls a large rat every 10 days or so, but I think they grow more quickly with smaller meals.

Mine will take the fuzzy without any problem. I'd never knew that they preferr larger food item over the small one. I thought their feeding instinct is trickered by the sense of smell ( primarily for ball pythons ), and site and heat. In some snakes, if it doesn't smell right they would not eat it. The reason I said they are trickered by the smell is because, snakes in captivity will feed on dead animals...and the snake in the wild will follow rodents' sent trail and trace it back to the hole.

I have a very large female ball that eats large rats weekly. They look like the jumbos from www.rodentpro.com I hope this helps.
