louisiana pine

derekdehaas Nov 19, 2006 11:33 PM

i have been thinking of adding a pair of louisiana pines and raise them to breeders. any of you work with those nice pines? know anybody who has them? all i have found was a pair of hatchling for $400 from captive bred excellent. from what i have learned is that there's only few of them in the wild and some breeders are trying to make a come back. right now i only have a pair of patternless southern pines and want to add more pits to work with and enjoy! i really love them.

I believe both Suncoast Herpetological and Daveb have listed some recently in the classifieds.

thanks, how much do they go for?

yep that's all of them-except for the mexican pines, pituophis deppei-which are pretty diffferent from the four you mentioned....ruthveni don't really have that much different requirements than the melanoleucus subspecies, but those in the hobby come from a pretty limited gene pool and be warned, there are lots of bogus la. pines out there, many of which do have some ruthveni in them,so they can resemble true/pure ruthveni to some degree....just get some from the most reputable breeders and get the full story on their background/lineage i.e. do your homework.check out the pituophis page,kj lodrigue lists some breeders there....hell even post pics here if you have any q's regarding a potential purchase and it's validity.enough people on this fofrum will give their honest opinion.....below are pics of a few of mine, all originating from reichling's zoo stock, and vandeventer's....keep in mind any priced noticably/well below any others,i would suspect as impure/hybrids;any deal sounding 'too good to be true',probably is just that...many of these sheysters tend to have their stories down cold so again just learn what true ruthveni look like, and ask around, don't get sucked into an impulse buy.there are enough people breeding quality la. pines today that you can take your time and get some good ones.

There are no Pine Snakes in Mexico. The deppei group is it's own entity, and in my view, have more in common with the Rat Snakes. The term, "Mexican Pine Snake" was created by someone who wanted to make fast sales, something that has become far too prevalent these days. Good luck working with these animals. they're a lot of fun.
