Too much soaking???

Homiachok Nov 20, 2006 10:29 AM

Hi I have purchased a newborn redtail, and since i got it, it doesn't ever want to get out of the water dish. He eats everytime and appears to be perfectly healthy, but since i got him, i'v seen him only twice out of the water. Is that normal?? Thank you!

Does your snake have mites? If he does that is why he soaks to drown the mites. If he or she doesn't have any mites it's to just cool themselves if temp in your tank/cage is too high. Some snakes just like to soak and other's don't. Either way your humity with a RTB should be around 50-60% as these snakes need it to peel properly when it is time for them. Hope this helps.

He had mites when i bought him, but i treated that problem with some predatory mites, and I have not seen any mites in my tank since. I will try rasing the humidity , which is pretty hard to do in a glass tank. I'll give it a shot with some plants. Thanks for the advice!
