Three Toed Box turtle pics

kensopher Nov 20, 2006 02:38 PM

This one is a yearling. I kept it indoors for the winter, but I am now regretting it. I have a couple that were just about the right size, but I wanted to be cautious. They are making such a mess!

Goodness, my camera makes them look so fake!

What a beauty! Cool lichens too.
Question on the shells of 3 toes verses other box turtles. My 3 toes shell seems to be thinner or not as hard as the others. Is this a characteristic, my imagination, or does it have to do more with age. She is my youngest and still growing. The others are all middle aged ladies.

It is probably due to the fact that it is a young turtle. Three Toe shells seem just as rigid as the others to me. It may also be due to that monstrous growth ring !! The most recent growth rings can take a little while to thicken up.

However, I have noticed that my adult Three Toes are MUCH more succeptible to shell infections. Put it this way, in my humid climate I don't have any problems with any of the other box turtle species. Every year I have at least one Three Toe that requires Chlorhexiderm baths. Could it be due to thickness?

I guess, what ever it is, there does appear to be something different about their shells. Maybe thickness wasn't the best term. Maybe it is more of an issue with hardness at the top surface layer. They seem to be more easily scratched if that makes sense, or perhaps less resilent.

How can you tell how thick or hard the shell is? I wouldn't want to put pressure to test for flexibility!

Good question. I have no idea. We're really just speculating.

Just realized that I copied RMB's topic below word for word. Not intentional...you know how it is, you read something and it gets stuck in your head. Sorry.

Gorgeous pictures In my opinion, there are few baby animals that are cuter than baby turtles...
