Behavior question

Today when I went in to check on our breeding pairs I noticed one of the males had his tail lifted straight up aiming towards the female. Now, this female has yet to be receptive and the male has shown little interest in her. Is this behavior part of courting or is it more of a defensive position? Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks!
