Sneezing Turtle

hattheturtle Nov 20, 2006 04:58 PM

My turtle just made a weird squeaking noise. I think he sneezed. I went over to check him out and he had bubbles on his nose. He has been a little sluggish latelly, not too bad, but just not as active. He also isnt eating as much. Is there anything I should do?

Bubbles from the nose is a symptom of an upper respiratory problem.
Please take your turtle to a qualified herp vet ASAP to determine whether or not it has an infection that should be treated with antibiotics.

Take him to a vet as soon as possible it sounds like an Upper Respiratory Infection which needs to be treated right away. If left untreated it could be deadly. He probably needs antibiotics.
Turn his temps up a few degrees.

If you need help finding a good herp vet let us know and we can direct you to one.

Thanks, will do. I live in the U district here in Seattle. Where is a good vet nearby?

Well the doc said that she couldn’t hear any wheezing in his lungs or anything, so she gave him a vitamin shot and told me to keep him warm. I switched to a ceramic heat lamp but it seems colder to me than my light bulb. Maybe I don’t have the right casing or something. Anyhow I now have him stuck in his cage by the heat source so that he stays warm, but he isn’t eating much anymore. I give him shaved carrot and he ignores it. He still snaps and makes glottal noises every now and then but I don’t hear any sneezing. So I dunno, I'm not sure what to do at this point.

You say it could be deadly? wow. I had a sneezing red-eared slider, never took it to the vet, and she recovered on her own. I didn't think it could be deadly.

Yes respiratory infection in turtles can be deadly.. pneumonia can be deadly to any living being.
Most need antibiotic treatment to recover.
