Why do anacondas have hourglass pupils?

RoswellBoa Nov 21, 2006 06:45 PM

I realise this is kind of a strange question, but it has nagged at me for many years...I think the biggest 'wow' I got from the first time I handled a yellow anaconda were those cool pupils; in strong light it almost appears that they have two pupils in the same eye. I had always guessed that they were designed to help the anaconda see above/below the water at the same time. I would like to hear anyone's opinion on this, thanks!

I am not an expert on the rod and cone structure of snakes, but I have noticed this more odd eye shape among some animals that appear to be adapted for crepuscular activity year around. Heterodons have a very similar appearance.

I'd like to see this phenomenom as well, but can't quite make it out on the average pic's on here.

Thanks
